Wine of the Year
Santa Margherita Winery
Santa Margherita represents the best of tradition, innovation, a passion for authentic and enjoyable wines, and respect for the people and land that produce them. Over 80 years ago, Count Gaetano Marzotto spearheaded the revival of an abandoned part of the Venetian countryside. Here, where rivers from the Alps cut through the sun-drenched hills on their winding way to the Mediterranean coast, he created much-needed farmland and restored traditional winemaking in a region that had been home to fine vineyards since the time of the Roman Empire. Using new agricultural science and a commitment to the needs of the Italian people, Marzotto named this labour of love after his beloved wife, Margherita, and the first piece of the Santa Margherita mosaic was laid. Since then, Santa Margherita has grown to encompass vineyards throughout Italy, from Veneto to Tuscany, producing distinctive, authentic wines with deep tradition and regional character.
Story
Count Gaetano Marzotto envisioned a harmonious union of people, nature, and technology—a visionary concept at a time when agriculture still relied on manual labor. In 1935, his dream materialized as he embarked on the restoration of a neglected tract of land in the Venetian countryside. His choice of location was strategic, as the area boasted a rich history of vineyards dating back to Roman times. Determined to revive this heritage, he implemented modern agricultural techniques while remaining dedicated to the well-being of the local community. Inspired by his unwavering love for his wife Margherita, he bestowed upon the land a name that reflected his deepest affections—Santa Margherita. Nestled amidst sun-kissed hills, where alpine rivers carve their path to the Mediterranean, Santa Margherita stands as a testament to his vision and passion.
